PHI 4, TB 3

An anticlimactic end, kind of, but the Phillies are champions of the world. And Aaron is champion of the pool! Final points and standings follow.

Thanks so much for playing this year; see you back here next fall. Payouts will happen shortly.

PHI: 18

Pena, C.: 1
Longoria, E.: 1

Kazmir, S.: 5
Hamels, C.: 3
Lidge, B.: 1

PHI 10, TB 2

Bit behind here at BPPHQ after going out of town for a few days; sorry about that, and thanks to the rain for letting me catch up.

Fun game to listen to on the radio, not least because Howard-pickers got on the board big-time, and you have to love the Blanton homer.

PHI: 5
Howard, R.: 7

New standings, with Lauren coming back and Maria gaining:

123: Aaron
111: Lauren
107: Jill
94: Maria
91: Sarah
87: Zach
77: Brian
68: Tim
57: Joe
41: Tom
40: Angela

With Howard's bat waking up, the core of the TB lineup has gone cold, and now we're in a weird rain delay; watch this space for a scheduling update. Jeff Passan thinks the rain delay symbolizes everything that's wrong with baseball right now, so while we're waiting, read and enjoy.

PHI 5, TB 4

Sorry about yesterday's points oversight; I'm on the road and having to do these on the fly. Never hesitate to correct me.

I think I've got these right, though: 3 for Philly pickers, 3 for Utley, and Howard finally shows up for 2 points.

118: Aaron
107: Jill East
99: Lauren
86: Sarah
82: Zach and Maria
77: Brian
61: Tim
50: Joe
34: Tom
33: Angela

Sonnanstine and Blanton at 8:30 tonight.

TB 4, PHI 2

Tampa Bay picks one up to scotch the sweep points for the pool; Howard's offensive absence continues, and the sports press is turning into the narrative for the postseason.

TB pickers get 3 points each, plus one each for Pena and Longoria and 4 for Shields.

The standings for today's off day:

112: Aaron
107: Jill East
94: Lauren
83: Sarah
79: Zach
77: Maria and Brian
59: Tim
48: Joe
32: Tom
31: Angela

[edited 10/26 to reflect Shields Ks]

Saturday night's game starts at 8:35 ET, MVP Garza vs. Grandpa Moyers.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

PHI 3, TB 2

Huh. So, Backstreet's back and it's not going to get any less weird from there, I guess.

PHI: 3

Utley, C.: 3

Hamels, C.: 5
Lidge, B.: 2
Kazmir, S.: 4

No huge change in the standings, although Maria is coming on somewhat.

112: Aaron
103: Jill East
94: Lauren
83: Sarah
79: Zach
77: Maria
69: Brian
56: Tim
48: Joe
30: Angela
28: Tom

Myers and Shields in The Battle Of The Plurals tomorrow night at 8:30.

TB 3, BOS 1

Looks good on ya, CRAPELBON. Gahhhhhd, I hate that guy.

Tampa heads to the World Series vs. Philadelphia; Jill East is looking to kick some ass and drink some beer...and it looks like she's almost out of beer; and something Brian this way comes. Whole new poolgame, folks.

Last night's points:

TB: 13

Longoria, E.: 1

Lester, J.: 8

A bunch of picks drop out, but only two poolies eliminated from contention; their names appear in italics below, and they won't appear in future updates. (Sorry, guys.)

The standings going into the Classic:

106: Aaron
99: Jill East
86: L. Shots
78: S. Bunts
76: Zach
69: Maria, Brian
59: Broomfield/Romine
56: Tim
48: Joe
30: Angela
28: Tom
23: Matt

Will Philly suffer from all those days off? Can Tampa ground the Flyin' Hawaiian? We'll find out at 8 PM ET Wednesday; Hamels climbs the hill for the Phillies, no word yet on the Rays' starter. It pains me, but I'm calling it for Tampa in 6. Discuss.

Saturday, October 18, 2008

BOS 4, TB 2

Color me surprised that Tampa couldn't touch up Beckett, and at home at the Trop no less. I thought the Rays could win this game easily, but I also think that not coming right back -- and having to face Lester again tomorrow night -- hurts them. This is what Boston does; I'm surprised they're in a position to do it again, but won't be surprised if they do do it.

Points:

BOS: 3

Youkilis, K.: 3

Shields, J.: 3

Not much change in the standings, except that I'm back in the money and Aaron widens his lead:

98: Aaron
86: Lauren
78: Sarah
77: Jill East
76: Zach
69: Maria
56: Brian
51: Broomfield/Romine
48: Joe
43: Tim
29: Angela
28: Tom
23: Matt

Lester vs. Garza tomorrow night at 8:07. If Boston wins, Aaron wins, pretty much.

Friday, October 17, 2008

BOS 8, TB 7

Really, J.D. Drew? Reeeeally?

...Guess so. Nobody picked ya, though. Suckah.

Boston's amazing comeback-in-stages keeps the Boston pickers in it, although once again no poolies benefit from the walkoff.

BOS: 3

Pena, C.: 3
Longoria, E.: 2

Kazmir, S.: 7
Matsusaka, D.: 2

Latest standings:

95: Aaron
86: Lauren
77: Jill East
75: Sarah
73: Zach
69: Maria
53: Brian
45: Broomfield/Romine and Joe
43: Tim
29: Angela
25: Tom
23: Matt

Joe wonders if last night's loss might not rattle the Rays; I don't think it will. It doesn't seem like a team that gets too down in response to a game like that. It does seem like a team that knows how to hit what's left of Beckett's stuff. Either way, we'll find out Saturday at 8 on TBS.

Thursday, October 16, 2008

PHI 5, LAD 1

The Phils go back to the Classic for the first time since '93. I suspected they'd win the pennant, but did not see it happening in five games...so much for that "Torre and Manny vs. the Sox" narrative all the sportswriters hoped so hard for.

Ze points:

PHI: 3 + 10

Howard, R.'s bat wakes up just in time: 1
Ramirez, M.'s never went to sleep, but alas, it wasn't enough: 2

Hamels, C.: 5 (no points awarded for having a foxy brother, but believe me, I considered it)

New standings below. We've lost two entrants on the Dodgers' elimination; their names, in italics here, will not appear in future updates. (Sorry, guys.)

92: Aaron
86: Lauren
75: Sarah
73: Zach
69: Maria
68: Jill Diddy
60: Jill Tupac
50: Brian
43: Tim
42: Broomfield/Romine and Joe
35: Tommy C.
27: Angela
25: Tom
21: Matt

It's Kazmir v. Dice-K tonight at 8 PM for all the pennant marbles. A Boston loss is not a total horror for the pool but will knock out Matt...and the 2007 Pool Champs Broomfield/Romine.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

TB 13, BOS 4

A rout puts Tampa up 3-1 in the series -- a set of circumstances I for one didn't see coming -- and shuffles our standings a bit. Eligible points below.

TB: 5

Pena, C.: 3
Longoria, E.: 3
Youkilis, K.: 2

Aaron still in the lead, but Jill East is climbing towards him with a knife in her teeth...

79: Aaron
68: Jill East
65: Lauren
60: Sarah
58: Jill West, Zach
50: Brian, Maria
42: Broomfield/Romine, Tim
39: Joe
35: Tommy C.
26: Angela
24: Tom
21: Matt

The AL takes tomorrow off; in the NL, L.A. tries to stave off elimination at 8:30. Hamels and Billingsley get the starts. Lauren mulls a coup.

TB 9, BOS 1; PHI 7, LAD 5

Ryan Howard finally squeezes out a point, Philly wins on the road, and here come the Tampa pickers.

Last night's points:

TB: 5
Pena, C.: 2
Longoria, E.: 2
Lester, J.: 7

PHI: 3
Utley, C.: 1
Howard, R.: 1
Ramirez, M.: 1
Lowe, D.: 4
Lidge, B.: 2

With both pitchers still in it and on the hill last night, Aaron reopens a big lead:

79: Aaron
65: L. Shots
60: Jill Diddy
58: Sarah and Jill Tupac
56: Zach
50: Maria
42: Brian
40: Broomfield/Romine
39: Joe
37: Tim
35: Tommy C.
24: Tom
23: Angela
21: Matt

TB and Boston tonight at 8, with Tampa up 2-1 in the series; Philadelphia looking to end it tomorrow night at 8:30.

Monday, October 13, 2008

LAD 7, PHI 2

Sorry for the delay in posting today, folks. I'll put up an updated score list after tonight's games, but below you'll find last night's points:

LAD: 5
Ramirez, M.: 1

No huge change in the standings; Jill Tupac leapfrogged over me and Zach, and Tommy C. is still showing signs of life, but no major shake-ups or anything.

Stay tuned...

Oh, and my Takeaway radio spot is here. Please keep in mind before you heckle that I got up at 5 AM to do it, so my repartee is not at its wittiest. Or using-verbs-iest.

Sunday, October 12, 2008

TB 9, BOS 8 (11)

Points galore on last night's non-pitchers' non-duel:

TB: 5

Youkilis, K.: 2
Longoria, E.: 4
Pena, C.: 1

Kazmir, S.: 2

Not much movement at the top of the standings, but some reshuffling in the middle:

64: Aaron
59: Lauren
51: Zach, Sarah
47: Jill Tupac
46: Jill Diddy, Maria
36: Joe
35: Brian
33: Broomfield/Romine
31: Tim
30: Tommy C.
23: Tom
21: Matt
20: Angela

The Dodgers try to get back into the series tonight at 8:22 PM on FOX. Moyer and Kuroda go to the hill.

Can't get enough of my trenchant postseason observations? I'll be on WNYC's The Takeaway tomorrow morning at 6:40. If you don't get up that early (...neither do I), watch this space for a link to the archive.

BOS 2, TB 0

Poor Matt; if Chip stupid Caray had shut up for five seconds, maybe Matsusaka could have hooked him up with a no-no. No such luck. He still racked up 9 K points, though, along with:

BOS: 3
Youkilis, K.: 1
Shields, J.: 6

Some movement in the standings, updated below:

64: Aaron
59: Lauren
49: Zach, Sarah
47: Jill Tupac
46: Maria
36: Joe
35: Jill Diddy
31: Broomfield/Romine
30: Tommy C.
29: Brian
26: Tim
23: Tom
21: Matt
16: Angela

Doesn't seem like much has changed in the last week, but the NL is off tomorrow; if Tampa can get off the schneid, a few poolies in the bottom half could move up in a hurry.

Beckett (who I'd thought was sidelined, but nobody picked him so who cares; heh) versus Kazmir tomorrow at 8:07.

God Bless Archuleta

All due respect to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, but the servicepeople assigned to the "God Bless America" duties in Philly have done little to impress me (or my glassware...what's left of it). This afternoon's rendition in particular would have worked better in a laxative ad.

Just so you have some context when I say that it's a relief to see D. Arch out there. And that he's not going sharp on every goddamn note.

In other news: way to go, TBS. I'm literally in the act of typing a bitchy but vague comment about how hard they're trying to jinx Dice-K, and Crawford gets the first hit off him. Matt could have clawed his way back in this thing, BUCK. Nice job.

PHI 8, LAD 5

Points for NLCS Game 2:

PHI: 3
Ramirez, M. : 4
Lidge, B.: 3

No huge change in the standings, although Aaron is barely holding Lauren off at this point, but the ALCS results should reshuffle things a bit. Look for updated standings tonight or tomorrow.

Thursday, October 9, 2008

PHI 3, LAD 2

We'll see how the series shapes up now that L.A.'s putative closer is out with elbow trouble. In the meantime, Philly pickers snag 3 along with

Ramirez, M. 1
Utley, C. 3
Lowe, D. 2
Hamels, C. 8
and Lidge, B. 1

And Aaron's lead narrows somewhat:

58: Aaron
52: L. Shots
43: Jill West and Maria
41: Zach
38: Sadie B.
35: Jill East
30: Tommy C.
29: Joe
27: Broomfield/Romine
26: Tim
23: Brian
17: Tom
16: Angela
12: Matt

Ryan Howard plates a few damn runs, the whole game changes. While we wait for that to happen, the NL goes again at 4:35 on FOX; ALCS kicks off on TBS at 8:37 with two pitching picks.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Going both ways

I could make a David Wright joke here, but I won't**. Instead, I'll address the question of whether pitchers are eligible for slugger points, and the answer is: yes. If your pitcher helps himself out with a RBI or two, those points will count toward your total.

And if Youkilis somehow winds up taking the mound during an 18-inning all-nighter, you'd better believe I'm racking up any Ks he gets.

I suspect that Aaron will find a way to be the only pool-izen who benefits from this, but there it is.

**I don't think, or care if, D. Wright is actually gay. Will that stop Jill from leaving an enraged comment? Let's find out!

BOS 3, LAA 2

...Ouch.

Three points for the win for Boston, plus 6 for the division series; Lackey picks up a lone point, and Lester 4. No points for the walk-off (nobody picked Lowrie, obvs); no RBI points for anybody.

Below, the updated standings. The four people eliminated with the Angels' loss -- John, Ben, Billy, and Warren -- will not appear in future updates (sorry, guys).

50: Aaron
40: L. Shots and Jill Tupac
37: Zach
35: Jill Diddy
33: Buntsy
32: Maria
30: Tommy C.
28: Joe
27: Broomfield/Romine
26: Tim
23: Brian
18: John and Warren
17: Tom
16: Angela
12: Matt
11: Billy T.
10: Ben

The NLCS begins Thursday at 8:22 PM on FOX (uch). See you then.

Monday, October 6, 2008

TB 6, CHW 2

Pluta rings 2 points out of Pena, and Tim gets a homer and an RBI point each from Dye on the way out, but the dearth of White Sox picks means their departure doesn't bode too ill for poolies.

Works for TB pickers, though; a handful of you snagged 3 points on the game win plus 6 for the division series.

The outcome of the imminent Boston/L.A. matchup is a bigger deal, as an Angels loss stands to knock four of you out entirely, cripple many of those remaining...and set Broomfield/Romine on the road to a repeat. The Impaler best get to hitting.

Updated standings later on.

Sunday, October 5, 2008

LAA 5, BOS 4 (12)

It's aliiiiiiiive!

The Angels outlast Papelbon and hang on, nixing the sweep and picking up 5 points for their pickers (3 for the win, 2 for doing it in extras). Two points apiece for Saunders and K-Rod, plus 1 for Youkilis.

Current standings:

40: L. Shots and Jill Tupac
37: Aaron and Zach
33: Sarah
32: Maria
30: Tommy C.
22: Jill Diddy
19: Joe
18: John
17: Tom and Warren
16: Angela
15: Tim
14: Broomfield/Romine
12: Matt and Brian
11: Billy T.
10: Ben

Tampa tries to lock it up at 5:05 PM tomorrow, followed by LAA/BOS at 8:35.

CHW 5, TB 3

Tampa adherents lose the sweep points as Ben hauls himself out of the basement with a trey for the win. No slugger/pitcher points in play.

No other change; Angels trying to come back from an outfield miscue in the top of the third. A Boston win knocks out several poolies outright and shakes up our standings big-time. Stay tuned!

Or read the latest Fire Joe Morgan shot across Klapisch's bow.

PHI 6, MIL 2

Philly proceeds to the NLCS and their date with the Dodgers. Nine points for PHI picks, plus one each for me (Lidge's K) and John (Braun's RBI). I was kind of hoping CC would hit a homer in his rando pinch-hit appearance so we could have a big argument over whether he'd get the RBI points, but it was not to be.

Aaron and Lauren have snatched the lead back from Jill West and about half the pitching picks have bitten the dust. Complete standings update at the close of play this evening.

LAD 3, CHC 1

Wow. WOW. Brrrrrrr-UTAL.

My nomination for the Thanks For Nothing Award: the entire Cubs offense, with the exception of D. Lee. Guess who picked D. Lee? That's right: nobody.

The two, the proud, the LAD pickers snag 11 points behind the win (3), the DS win (6), and the DS sweep (2). The many, the disgusted, the Cubs pickers get nada. Fukudome benched; nothing out of Soto, Theriot, or A. Ramirez; I actually was kind of jealous of that Lilly pick until now.

And then there's Tommy C., whose entire slate is Cubs picks...except for LAD, so he's still right in it.

Updated standings, if you can see through your tears of rage:

33: Jill Tupac
30: Tommy C.
28: Aaron
26: L. Shots
23: Maria
22: Jill Diddy and Zach
17: me and Joe Reid, together again
15: Tim
14: Angela
13: Broomfield/Romine
12: the formidable folk quartet of Brian, John, Tom, and Warren
7: Matt
6: Billy T.
5: Ben

Dear Angels: PULL IT TOGETHER LIKE NOW.

Phillies look to slam the door at 1:07 PM, Tampa ditto at 4:07, and the pool fights for a large chunk of its life with the Saunders/Beckett match-up at 7:17.

MIL 4, PHI 1

Seconding A. Cams's comments on the anti-Phils umpiring, but hey, at least Milwaukee got their acts together, unlike some division champions I might name. More on that in a moment; points values are as follows:

MIL: 3
Howard, R.: 1
Braun, R.: 1

Howard pries himself off the shitlist, and John snags some proprietary points.

Updated standings shortly; untangling the Cubs from the spreadsheet is going to take a few minutes.

Saturday, October 4, 2008

TB 6, CHW 2; BOS 7, LAA 5

Of all goddamned people...J.D. Drew. Whom nobody picked, because he had to have like seven epidurals to play last night. Beckett, ditto, will no doubt rack up 39 strikeouts tomorrow night just to punish us.

Every series now stands 2-0, a state of affairs we expected in some cases (PHI/MIL, TB/CHW), should have expected in others (LAA), and blithely ignored the potential for with the Cubs. My emotions are mixed: on the one hand, the LDSes are a time-suck for your poolmistress, but on the other hand...all sweeps? Of majority picks? Enemy of fun.

Come on, Cubs. At least get the poolies some RBI points on your way out, good grief.

Your Friday-night pointage:

TB 6, CHW 2
TB: 3
TB Kazmir: 4

BOS 7, LAA 5
BOS: 3
LAA Teixeira, M.: 1
LAA Santana, E.: 3
BOS: Matsusaka, D.: 5

A. Cams back on top in the adjusted standings:

28: Aaron
25: Lauren
22: Jills East and West; Zach; Maria
19: Tommy C.
17: Sadie B.
16: Joe
14: Tim
13: Broomfield/Romine
12: Brian; Warren
11: Tommy R.
10: Angela
8: John
7: Matt
6: Billy T.
5: Ben

Philly fixes to drop the hammer at 6:30 PM, L.A. at 10.

Get those ballots ready, my friends; in lieu of MVP awards, the Bunting's Baseball Pool Association Of Petty Grumblers will be voting on the recipient of the Thanks For Nothing, Unclutchwad Memorial Golden Fan Trophy at the conclusion of each series. Your nominations may go in the comments. I hereby bet myself a dollar that I can guess Joe's selection.

Day 2 Wrap-Up

"So, Sarah -- why did you change the pool around this year?"

This Cubs meltdown? This is basically why.

I knew we'd have a boatload of Cubbies bets; I knew that, if the ills of a short series asserted themselves and we didn't have diversified picks, we'd get a repeat of last year, where the Cubs and Yanks both got bounced, and two thirds of the pool, having gone down in flames, no longer cared.

Next year we should have a side pool on which player, whom nobody picked, will rack up points nobody can claim while everyone who picked Ryan Howard is like, "GOD, WHY?!" Freakin' Victorino, man.

...Okay! Points.

TB 6, CHW 4
TB: 3
TB Longoria, E.: 5
TB Shields, J.: 4
CHW Vasquez, J.: 6

PHI 5, MIL 2
PHI: 3
MIL Sabathia, CC: 5
MIL Gagne, E.: 1 (...just kidding)

LAD 10, CHC 3
LAD: 5
LAD Ramirez, M.: 3
CHC Zambrano, C.: 7

On the plus side, everybody's on the board. On the minus side...the Cubs. New leader going into tonight's AL slate:

25: L. Shots
24: Aaron
22: Zach and Maria
21: Jill West
19: Tommy
15: Jill East
14: yours truly
13: Joey Apollo
12: Warren
11: Tom
10: Broomfield/Romine and Angela
9: Brian
8: Tim
5: John and Ben
2: Matt and Billy

White Sox/Rays at 6, Red Sox/Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, California, United States, North America, Earth at 9:30.

Day 1 Wrap-Up

Points as follows:

PHI 3, MIL 1
PHI: 3
Utley, C.: 2
Hamels, C.: 9
Lidge, B.: 3

LAD 7, CHC 2
LAD: 5 (3 for the win, 2 for the blowout)
Ramirez, M.: 2
Lowe, D.: 6
Dempster, R.: 2

BOS 4, LAA 1
BOS: 3
Lester, J.: 7
Lackey, J.: 5

On the board so far:

Aaron: 21
L. Shots: 14
Jill West: 13
Maria: 12
Broom/Rom: 10
Buntsy: 8
Tommy and Jill East: 7
Joe, Warren, and Zach: 5
Matt, Pluta, and Billy the T.: 2

Shaking his fist at the official scorer:

John, robbed of a Braun RBI

Tomorrow's sked:
Pale Hose/Rays, 2:30 PM
Brewers/Phils, 6 PM
Biden/Palin, 9 PM
Dodgers/Cubs, 9:30 PM

That gives you most of the day to pray that the Cubs don't do to the pool what they (and A-Rod) did to it last year; use the time wisely.

Rules/Points Values

Just a reminder: many points values have changed since last year.

-----

THE SCORING
It works like this: you pick two teams, two position players, and two pitchers. You get points based on the performances of those teams and those players.

Team points come from wins:
each game won = 3 pts.
games won by blow-out (5 runs or more) = 2 pt.
games won in extra innings = 2 pt.

division series = 6 pts.
championship series = 10 pts.
World Series = 15 pts.

sweep/division = 2 pts.
sweep/championship = 5 pts.
sweep/World Series = 8 pts.

Player points come from RBI:

each RBI = 1 pt.
each home run = 1 pt.
walkoff hit = 3 pts.

(Just to clarify: 1) for a solo home run, that's one point for the ribbie, one for the homer; 2) a walk/HBP/"non-hit event" can count as a walkoff.)

Pitcher points come from strikeouts and/or other extraordinary performance:

each K = 1 pt.
throws a complete game = 3 pts.
throws a no-no/perfect game = 10 pts.

Today's Schedule

Picks still trickling in as of this writing; no duplicate picks yet.

All times Eastern:

3:07 MIL at PHI
6:37 LAD at CHI
10:07 BOS at LAA

Aaaaaand the picks

Behold the master list. If I've got any of your picks wrong, please email me ASAP so I can correct the spreadsheet. (If it's wrong here it's probably only a typo, but just in case...) Thanks!

We don't seem to have any dupes. We do have a few long shots that could make things interesting.

All the entries are formatted the same: name, team, team, position players, pitchers.
