Postmortem

Good (very early) morning! First, a minor correction: arithmetic errors -- the state bird of the BPP -- put our actual final totals at

Yuhan 183
Currie 175
Bauer 150

Cooley 145
Shotwell 2 142

It doesn't affect the money, but just so you know that I do actually check this stuff. Uh, eventually. Heh.

Congratulations again to our winners; money will go out today. (Bauer, my first instinct would be to donate to a Houston school here, but it's your money, so let me know what you'd like to do. Maybe buy some oaktag and a Sharpie for your "WE'RE NUMBER ONE; THE WILPONS ARE NUMBER TWO" sign for 2018?)

A few wrap-up notes on the MVP -- Most Valuable Pick -- et al. before we fold this one in tissue paper. Among position players, Springer was the MVP of the World Series in the pool as well as on the field, but Altuve was the most consistent and pulled down the most points overall. "It's like if Patek could hit," my dad said dreamily on the phone yesterday, possibly while writing Mr. Dave Altuve on his Trapper Keeper. ("I love your mother but if she can't adjust to a major-league slider...") Cap tips to Jay Bruce and Aaron Judge, who would have been difference-makers had their teams gone further.

MVPitchers and more, after the jump.

The pointiest pitcher, of course, was Mr. Verlander with 33. Honorable mention to Strasburg, a solid pick for future seasons should his front office find a way to get the Nats out of the division round (or should Boras find a way to get Strasburg out of Washington, though this seems unlikely).

As for LVPs, we had a couple pitchers hose their pickers in the DS (Greinke, Arrieta), and a couple more post negatives in the CS (Lester, Severino); Darvish looked like hell in the Classic but was fine before that, posting 6-7 points a start. You could make arguments for any of the first four guys depending on how badly they boned your slate (I'm going Greinks, m'self). Hitter-wise, nobody was really that wretched, and while it feels uncharitable to pin it on Encarnacion when it was an injury, nobody else is really suggesting himself. Like, many of the bottom slates had Lindor, but Lindor did scrape up 5 points. Call it.

He wasn't great in Game 7, but if The Shane Victorino Unpicked 'N' En Fuego award had a Cy Young, we'd probably have to give it to McCullers. But the real purpose of the Victorino is to "honor" a hitter nobody picked who racked up a gazillion points, so we have an iss-yew, because the clear TB winner whom nobody picked, Gurriel, should have been suspended during the Series to send a message -- and I'm certainly not settling an award named for a Hawaiian on his Beaker-haired ass. No, Gurriel can go to sensitivity training, and Dodger Chris Taylor can put the Shane on HIS mantel instead. (Tip of the tam to Didi Gregorius, who came pret-ty close to grabbing this despite not playing in the final round.)

Thanks again for playing this year, everyone! Pleased to have new poolies aboard, and to do this with the old guard once more. Again, ducats will go out today -- and I'm probably done checking this 'til Labor Day 2018, so if you need me, email: bunting at tomatonation dot com. #LGM
