BOS 4, COL 3: Congratulations, Beantown

And Broomfield/Romine, who take the big money.

Boston picked up 2 for the win, 15 for winning the Series itself, and another 8 for the sweep for a total of 25 on the night.

Final standings:

126: Broomfield/Romine ($140)
123: Tom ($40)
111: Aaron C. ($20)
109: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
107: Jill
44: John
42: Maria Trips
21: Angela

Thanks for playing, everyone! I'll see you back here next year. Winnings will go out in the next couple of days.

BOS 10, COL 5: The End Is Nigh

I hadn't expected the Rockies to roll over quite this easily, but their bats showed some signs of life last night. Not enough, though. Boston gets 2 for the win and 1 for the blowout...aaaaa-gain. Angela grabs 5 for the Dice Ks.

No significant change in the standings, so I'll wait to see whether tonight takes us to our final tally. Stay tuned.

BOS 2, COL 1

A pitchers' duel ends in another loss for Colorado, although the Rockies looked much more put together last night than the night before. Boston gets a modest 2; no pitching or player points.

98: Broomfield/Romine
95: Tom
83: Aaron C.
81: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
79: Jill
44: John
42: Maria Trips
16: Angela

Today's a travel day; Saturday, it's Dice-K v. Fogg in the mountains.

BOS 13, COL 1

I don't know how that hack Joe Buck refrained from making this joke, but I have no such compunction: That was Rock-y, all right.

[rimshot]

Sorry. Colorado's position players looked rusty in the field and overmatched at the plate, and got zero help from the pitching staff. Another Mays-esque night for young Pedroia, and the pool lead is wrested from Tom with 3 for Boston and another 9 for Beckett.

96: Broomfield/Romine
93: Tom
81: Aaron C.
79: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
77: Jill
44: John
42: Maria Trips
16: Angela, who needs Dice-K to throw at least two no-hitters in which he strikes out every batter

Jimenez v. Schilling tomorrow, 8:30 ET. According to one of FOX's usually irritating stats, several of the teams to get blown out this badly in Game 1 went on to win the WS. I still don't think much of Colorado's chances, especially now that we know they won't have Wakefield to kick around.

BOS 11, CLE 2 (AL Champs)

Before I get to the business at hand, a note for David Ortiz: Papi, love you, really, but don't put on the clubhouse-celebration champagne goggles until the Indians have officially lost the game and left the field. Nobody thinks they're coming back from nine runs down, but that shit is still tacky, and it's one thing for Manny to pull crap like that; you should know better.

We could point to a few key plays where Cleveland biffed something and took themselves out of it -- the third-base coach holding Lofton up, the Keystone business in short left -- but I think their pitching just ran out of gas. I had a feeling this would happen once Boston got their feet back in the door, and so it did.

And with that, I leave you, in the company of Andrew and Zach.

Boston pickers get 2 for the win, another 1 for the blowout, and of course 10 for winning the pennant; Angela snags 3 Dice Ks.

Still in it:

90: Tom
84: Broomfield/Romine
69: Aaron C.
67: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
65: Jill
44: John
33: Maria Trips
16: Angela

We've got a bunch of shared picks left, which means, functionally, that it's a fight between Tom and Broomfield/Romine for the big money, but you never know, Dice-K could throw a couple no-hitters.

Rox v. Sox starts Wednesday at 8 ET. My prediction: Colorado pitching can't hold this Red Sox lineup, not after so much time off. Boston in 5.

BOS 12, CLE 2; Standings, October 21, PM

Another Sox blowout nets their pickers 3; no slugging or pitching points.

No real changes in the standings, but here are the point totals going into tonight's deciding game:

77: Tom
71: Broomfield/Romine
56: Aaron C.
54: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
52: Jill
44: John
35: Andrew
33: Maria Trips
29: Sarah
16: Zach
13: Angela

8:21 PM ET for all the marbles. Scheduled starters according to Yahoo! Sports are Westbrook and Matsuzaka; the FOX booth was muttering last night about Wedge starting Sabathia instead, but that seems unlikely since he hasn't been dominant in this series and the Indians would probably rather bet on their offense roughing Dice-K up.

Thursday, October 18, 2007

BOS 7, CLE 1; Standings, October 18, PM

Boston stays alive, and Boston pickers stay alive with a vengeance: 2 points for the win, plus 1 for the blowout; 11 points for Beckett. Sabathia pickers have to make do with 6.

74: Tom
68: Broomfield/Romine
53: Aaron C.
51: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
49: Jill
44: John
35: Andrew
33: Maria Trips

29: Sarah
16: Zach
13: Angela

I didn't bother bolding the movers; the short version is that John, Andrew, and I got dropped by the Beckett faction big-time. Sabathia's had an interesting postseason -- I almost picked him (and should have, since I could only have won the pool if he'd gotten eaten by a bear prior to tonight's start), but I'd expected him to rack up more strikeouts than he has.

Back to Fenway for Game 6, Cleveland still leading the series 3-2. I feel like Cleveland may have missed their chance to nail the coffin shut, but Carmona's no joke. See you Saturday.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

CLE 7, BOS 3; Standings, October 16, PM

Andrew and I log another 2 for the Cleveland win, and oh yeah, slugger points. Remember those? Broomfield/Romine gets 2 for the Ortiz shot, moving up to 54; Andrew and I go up to 29; no change in the overall rankings.

The Sox are, to my surprise, down 3-1 in this series. There's a rare non-travel off day tomorrow, followed by a pitching-pick showdown on Thursday at 8:07 ET, Beckett v. Sabathia. If Cleveland wins, it locks out another eight poolies...but doesn't necessarily put them out of the money, especially if Beckett throws another gem.

Stay tuned.

CLE 4, BOS 2; COL 6, ARI 4 (NL Champs)

Well well well. We'll take the AL first -- Cleveland takes a 2-1 lead in the series behind the...unstoppable Jake Westbrook? Whatever works; Andrew and I net 2, and Angela emerges from the cellar behind Matsusaka's 6 Ks.

And now: the NL. The Rockies evidently do not fuck around; Tom and John snag 2 for the win, 10 for the division series, and 5 for sweep of same for a grand total of 17...and for a few innings there, it looked like they'd add another point for a blowout. Arizona managed not to let that happen, but got pretty much rolled over on otherwise, and with that, Broomfield, Joe, and Famous Original Maria must leave us.

...Heather, my love: there's a new sheriff in town.

65: Tom
52: Broomfield/Romine
44: John
39: Aaron C.
37: Matt, Aaron M., and Lauren
35: Jill
27: Sarah and Andrew
22: Maria Trips
13: Angela
10: Zach

8:07 ET is the start time tomorrow; Tom is the man to beat.

Sunday, October 14, 2007

COL 4, ARI 1; Standings, October 14 PM

43 degrees on the field, steady rain for most of the game, and the umpiring crew included Angel Hernandez and Tom Hallion. ..."Hallion"? "Hellion"? With..."Angel"? Just me, then? Slow night in the pool; sue me.

The point is, it seems the Rockies won't be stopped. John and Tom get 2, and everyone else is waiting for the AL to come back on the service (or for the D-bats to wake up).

52: Broomfield/Romine
48: Tom
39: Aaron C.
37: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
35: Jill
27: John
25: Broomfield, Bunting, and Andrew
22: Maria Trips
17: Joe and Famous Original Maria
10: Zach
7: Angela

Tomorrow night's docket should make things verrrrry interesting. A Colorado sweep means Tom takes the heretofore-unchallenged lead from Broomfield/Romine, and John's right in the thick of things, not to mention that another handful of poolies will depart from the running -- but that's not 'til 10. 7 PM is Red Sox v. Insectians with Dice K on the mound, a.k.a. "Angela: The Revenge."

Saturday, October 13, 2007

CLE 13, BOS 6: Oh, Gagne

Thanks, Boston bullpen with the exception of Johnny Paps! Andrew and I pick up 2 for the win, 1 for the blowout, and 1 for extra innings.

52: Broomfield/Romine
46: Tom
39: Aaron C.
37: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
35: Jill
25: Broomfield, Bunting, Andrew, and John LLC
22: Maria Trips
17: Joe, Famous Original Maria
10: Zach
7: Angela

A series sweep is now off the table for Boston pickers.

AL is off tomorrow while the teams travel to Cleveland; in the NL, it's the Broomfield entries versus John and Tom at 8:30 ET tomorrow night, no pitching or slugging picks in play.

COL 3, ARI 2; BOS 10, CLE 3

Last night's points:

Colorado +3 (2 for the win, 1 for extra innings)
Boston +3 (2 for the win, 1 for the blowout)
Sabathia +3
Beckett +7

The updated standings, with movers in bold:

52: Broomfield/Romine
46: Tom
39: Aaron C.
37: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
35: Jill
25: Broomfield, John
22: Maria Trips
21: Sarah, Andrew

17: Joe, Famous Original Maria
10: Zach
7: Angela

Sabathia could have shaken things up more if he'd had his good stuff, but it was good enough to drag Zach into double digits. Beckett put Jill and Maria Trips back in the hunt, and is shaping up as the smartest pick of the season; of the five top points-getters, only Tom does not have him.

But of the five top points-getters, only Tom picked the Rockies. Broomfield/Romine better look out; if Arizona doesn't get it together, that's Tom's beer they're drinking.

NL is off tonight; Cleveland at Boston, 8:20-ish, Carmona vs. Schilling -- or, as Andrew and I like to call it, "Mr. Hafner, go make us some money."

Thursday, October 11, 2007

COL 5, ARI 1; Standings, October 12, Early AM

SI is giving this series to the D-backs in seven, but they might have their work cut out -- Colorado pickers add 2, Webb pickers add 4.

Not much change in the rankings; I've bolded the movers.

42: Broomfield/Romine
37: Tom
29: Aaron C.
27: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
25: Broomfield, Jill
22: John
21: Sarah
18: Andrew
17: Joe, Famous Original Maria
15: Maria Trips
7: Angela, Zach

Tomorrow night seems likely to shake things up, with two of the surviving pitching picks facing off at 7:07 ET. Rockies/Diamondbacks take the field at 10:07.

Shake it off, shake it off

We're back tomorrow night with the start of the NLCS -- Colorado v. Arizona in the desert, Francis and Webb the starters. I don't have a dog in that hunt anymore, but anyone else not wanting the pool to devolve into an undignified scrap for the second-place money is advised to root for the Mile-High Club.

The good news, pool-wise, is that well over half of the pitching picks are still in play.

I have had zero time to read up on the series, so I don't know what the prevailing wisdom is on who's going to win, but my completely ignorant take is that the days off may finally have sapped Colorado's mo. Feel free to correct me in the comments.

Game time is 8:37 ET.

CLE 6, NYY 4; Standings, October 8, PM

It looked like a possible comeback -- lights-out throwing from Farnsworth, A-Rod finally on the board with a dinger, a great catch by Damon and a long ball by Abreu -- but it ran out of gas. And so did a bunch of picks.

A-Rod got his pickers 2 points before departing the postseason (and possibly the Bronx); I also picked up a point for Rivera's lone K, plus 7 for Cleveland's game/series win, joined by Andrew, but this is an ill wind for the pool at large -- every slugger pick but Broomfield/Romine's is now gone, and Dad, Tim, Ben, and Maria Deuce are out of the running.

Below, the current standings. Entrants with no picks left are in italics, and will not appear in future updates. (Sorry, guys.)

42: Broomfield/Romine
35: Tom
29: Aaron C.
27: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren
25: Broomfield, Jill
21: Sarah
20: John
18: Andrew
15: Maria Trips
13: Joe, Famous Original Maria
12: Ben
11: Tim, Maria Deuce
7: Angela, Zach
6: Dad

Grim...but not a foregone conclusion, not yet. The herd's a bit thinner, but there's still some excitement ahead.

Sunday, October 7, 2007

NYY 8, CLE 4; Standings, October 7, PM

It didn't look good for a while there -- and the Captain still looks like crap at the plate -- but the Yankees fended off elimination and Yankees pickers clambered back into the game with 2 points (plus 2 to me for Rivera's Ks). An offensive sputter from the Indians took away that extra blowout point, alas.

The Bomber bats have finally awakened; Moose is the projected starter for tomorrow night's game; tough to say which one's going to make the difference. But we're all still in this thing, so let's hope A-Rod avails himself of the short porch pronto.

A little bit of reshuffling here in the scores:

42: Broomfield/Romine
35: Tom
27: Aaron C., Matt
25: Aaron M., Lauren, Jill
23: Broomfield
18: John
15: Maria Trips
11: Sarah, Andrew, Tim, Joe, Famous Original Maria
10: Ben
9: Maria Deuce
7: Zach
5: Angela
4: Dad

7:37 PM tomorrow in the Bronx.

BOS 9, LAA 1

Ouch. OUCH.

In what's shaping up to be the dullest postseason in recent memory, Boston advanced to the ALCS earlier this evening with a 9-1 blowout.

Psyched: Sox pickers, who all picked up 10 (plus another 2 for the clairvoyant Broomfield/Romine team).

Mildly bummed: Zach and John.

Gripped by malaise: Poolies watching CLE/NYY. As of this writing, Clemens has just been hooked in favor of the inconsistent Phil Hughes, while the TBS booth team is reporting that, if the Yankees lose this series, Steinbrenner is going to fire Joe Torre.

Hell of a day at sea, sirs.

Facing extinction

Today's game slate: Boston/Anaheim at 3, Cleveland in the Bronx at 6:30.

For Boston to win this series isn't terribly surprising; a sweep would be somewhat unexpected, but it doesn't harm the pool. A Cleveland sweep, on the other hand, is a disastrous prospect: about a quarter of the players get knocked out outright.

And that's not even counting the slugger slate. Of the surviving position player picks, only one is not Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod's batting average in the series to date: .000. His performance Friday evening: a hat trick. (In Rodriguez's defense, nobody else is hitting for shit either except Abreu. Mr. November is riding the interstate at .125.)

Hard to know what to expect; I had bet on the Cubs to hang in there last night, but the D-backs got 'em down early and kept 'em down for the duration. No clue what's going to happen in L.A., but this Westbrook guy going up for the Indians does not have intimidating numbers. My prediction: Angels and Bombers both live to fight another day. Hope I'm right or Broomfield's going home with our lunch money.

Pool Standings October 7, AM: Sweep City

And, fittingly, Broomfield is the mayor. Sentimental faves the Cubs and NL pool majority pick the Phils both packed it in last night; a valiant effort on the mound by Grandpa Moyers made the Philadelphia loss especially painful.

Arizona and Colorado pickers all add 9 points -- 2 for the win, 5 for the division win, and another 2 for the series sweep. Nobody else gets squat, and the elimination of Philadelphia chopped out a healthy number of slugger picks as well.

30: Broomfield/Romine
25: Tom
21: Broomfield
18: John
17: Aaron C.
15: Matt, Aaron M., Lauren, Jill
13: Maria Trips
11: Andrew
9: Bunting, S., Tim, Joe, and Famous Original Maria
8: Ben
7: Zach, Maria Deuce
3: Angela
2: Bunting, D.

Big gainers: Tom and John. Officially in the weeds: Tim, down to a single team pick.

Pool Standings October 6, AM

Not a ton of movement since last we spoke of this. Broomfield/Romine still leading/cheatine, followed by Matt and Tom and the Gang Of Four at 15; Andrew and I moved up; Angela on the board; my pops draggin' ass.

21: Broomfield/Romine
17: Matt
16: Tom
15: Aarons C. and M., Lauren, and Jill
13: Maria Trips
12: Broomfield
11: Andrew
9: Bunting fille, Tim, John, Joe, and Famous Original Maria
8: Ben
7: Zach and Maria Deuce
3: Angela
2: Bunting pere

Interestingly, although kind of suckily from a pool perspective, all four serieses stand at 2-0 -- and only one of the teams who's ahead is a majority pick. It could get ugly (by which I mean "irrelevant") quickly for folks who didn't spread their picks around...or who went with sentiment over sabermetrics with their NL picks. Folks like me who thought Jamie Moyer had died of old age, and are not very excited to see that he's the Phils' starter this evening.

AL (and therefore Aaron C.) gets the night off; NL Fight For Your Life Fest '07 starts at 6:07 ET at historic Wrigley Field.

My prediction: Arizona's road record is meh enough that the Cubs have a shot at holding the line. If they don't get psyched out and someone tells Soriano that Jill digs the long ball, it's Chicago's night. Philadelphia lost two at home and has to adjust to the altitude. I hope I'm wrong, but I think Colorado locks up a championship slot.

And now, a message from the Department of Mixed Blessings

CLE 2, NYY 1 (F/11)

It was the best of times (top-notch starting pitching; bite-your-nails action); it was the worst of times (nice Biblical bug swarm, shores of beautiful Lake Erie). As a Yankee fan, I feel jobbed by two things: the umps' failure to stop the game until Joba Chamberlain was not coated in insects, which seemed to me pretty clearly to be causing his control issues; and the umps' failure to bust that elbow-armor dude for not getting out of the way of that one pitch. Not that it made the final difference.

But why dwell on these bagatelles? Obviously it's A-Rod's fault, even though nobody else hit a lick either except Cabrera and the team wouldn't even have made October without Rodriguez. He'll get blamed, and then he'll go to Chicago.

However: Andrew and I pick up 3 for a Tribe win in extra innings, plus I get 3 more for the Rivera Ks.

BOS 6, LAA 3

As much as I irrationally loathe certain current players on the Red Sox (Varitek and Youkilis, Greek God of walks: eat bees, today), I have to give it up -- they play exciting ball, and I'm often reminded, watching that team, why I love the game. Papelbon is just fun to watch pitch. The kid thinks he's putting out actual fires out there. And a walk-off bottom-of-the-ninth two-outs dinger from Manny? That shit is hot, come on.

Sadly, nobody picked Prof. Ramirez as their slugger, but Boston pickers get 2, and Angela joins us at last with 3 points.

Updated pool standings and today's sked in a sec.

Pool Standings October 5 AM

The Assassination Of The Pool By The Cheaters Broomfield And Romine continues, but we've got Tom and Matt coming on and a pair of Buntings clinging for dear life to the bottom rung.

19: Broomfield/Romine
15: Matt
14: Tom
13: the Aarons, Lauren, Jill, and Maria Trips
12: Broomfield
9: Tim, John, Joe, and Famous Original Maria
8: Andrew, Ben
7: Zach and Maria Deuce
3: Bunting Jr.
2: Bunting Sr.

lurking expectantly: Angela

Tonight's action begins at 5:07 (...? Shut up, TBS) with Yanks/Tribe, followed by the debut of the last starting-pitcher pick for the Sox at 8:37. No NL games tonight, so it's all Joe and Aaron C. all the time.

And then...the weekend. With the Cubs and Phillies both down two, the pool is facing a repeat of last year's "betting Detroit is for suckers" bloodbath.

ARI 8, CHC 4

Can't say this is an expected development...for anyone except the Broomfield teams, that is. Two points for Arizona believers; no points on HR or Ks.

Thursday, October 4, 2007

CLE 12, NYY 3

The bad news: my grandmother has a sharper break on her slider than Ross "T-Ball" Ohlendorf. I kept squinting at the dude and muttering, "That doesn't look like Farnsworth..."

The good news: folks picking Cleveland get 3; Sabathia, 5; and Wang, 2.

Even better news: I think Ronnie Darling is in the booth for the Cubs/D-backs. Love that guy. I don't follow the Mets, but I have been known to watch a few games just to remind myself what a non-sucky announcing team sounds like.

COL 10, PHI 5

Bleah. Kaz Matsui going yard off Philly pitching = a large number of semi-depressed poolites.

Colorado earns its pickers 2 points for the win plus another for the blow-out. Howard pickers snag 2, so Zach joins the board.

It's A-Rod v. C.C. on my TV right now. Hot night; good thing there's a pool.

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

ARI 3, CHC 1

The few, the proud, the Arizona picks snag 2, plus 8 points for Zambrano and 9 for Webb. No HRs of note.

At the end of tonight's action, the scores:

17: Broomfield/Romine
13: the Aarons, Matt, Lauren, and Jill
11: Maria Trips
10: Broomfield
9: Joe, Famous Original Maria
8: Ben
7: Tim, Maria Deuce
6: John
4: Tom

not on the board: Angela, Andrew, and the Buntings

Tomorrow's schedule should get almost everyone else into the action; Boston and Los Angeles are off, but we're tagging in (at least?) two more pitching picks. And if A-Rod goes yard, it gets ugly.

BOS 4, LAA 0

Two things I forgot: 1. Point tallies during the LDSes are an ass-tear; 2. Josh Beckett is still a really good pitcher.

On the board: Boston picks for 2, Ortiz picks for 2, Lackey picks for 4, and ze beeg wieners, Beckett picks with 11 -- 8Ks plus a CG. Of course, Beckett accounts for a full third of the pitcher picks, so not a ton of ground gained there.

I'll spare you the nitty-gritty until the Cubs/D-backs scores come in, but for now it's Broomfield/Romine with a thin lead at 15, a big crowd at 13, and everyone else.

COL 4, PHI 2

...Boo.

The few, the proud, the Rockies pickers grabbed two points. And though the Phils lost, Hamels fans racked up 7.

Tim and Maria 2: The Deuce on the board with 7, followed by John and Tom with 2 for the game win. Everyone else back at zero.
Voila, les picks! If I've got any of your picks wrong, please email me ASAP so I can correct the master file. Thanks!

Like last year, no duplicates. Yankees are the most-picked team, which is interesting; A. Rod is far and away the most picked position player, which is even more interesting. Most picked pitcher: Josh Beckett.

Also of note: nobody picked Vlad Guerrero; only one pick for Dice K; my dad apparently knows something we don't; Johnny likes a long shot.

We're underway in Philly with the Rockies up 2-0. Buckle up!

Ready To Rumble

Our pool population is still incomplete; I'll post it as soon as entries close tomorrow at 3 PM. All I can tell you so far is that, like last year, we have no duplicate picks as of this writing.

In the meantime, you can find tomorrow's game slate here. Everyone's in play but CLE/NYY with a bunch of pitching picks going to the hill. The madness begins at 3 PM ET on TBS.

I love it when a pool comes together

...Entries slowly trickling in; when I have them all, I'll post them here.
